King’s Property

October 31, 2007

King’s Property by Morgan Howell, is a strong start to the  Queen of the Orcs series. Dar, a peasant girl barely scraping by, is betrayed by her family. Branded and enslaved by King Kregant’s army, she is assigned as a drudge to the dreaded orc regiment. Rather than prostitute herself out to soldiers on the side for extra food and clothing as do most of the other women, Dar braves her fear of the orcs, learning their language and making a place for herself in their society. But as the war escalates, will Dar survive the enmity her actions have incurred among the human side of the camp?

I found King’s Property an engrossing read. Dar is a stubborn, kick-ass heroine ready to die fighting but sneaky enough to survive. This book reminded me strongly of Elizabeth Moon’s Deeds of Paksenarrion series.

Support America Unchained! on Nov. 17th

October 29, 2007

On November 17th, the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving, many communities around the country will be urging residents to shop at locally-owned, independent businesses (such as Fiction Addiction) for the day.

This movement, called America Unchained!, is sponsored by the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA). According to AMIBA, shopping at local independents circulates your money in your local economy 3.5 times longer than if you shop at a chain, generating greater community health and prosperity.

Greenville has its own Indepent Business Alliance, GIBA, which I’m planning to join.

The Vegetable Dishes I Can’t Live Without

October 24, 2007

Vegetable Dishes I Can't Live WithoutThe other day none of the other produce at the grocery store looked that great, so I was forced to buy broccoli. My husband, Lee,  loves it, but it’s not one of my favorite vegetables. In the hopes of jazzing it up, I turned to The Vegetable Dishes I Can’t Live Without by Molly Katzen (well-known author of The Moosewood Cookbook). Her recipe for Broccoli, Apples, & Red Onion in Honey-Mustard Marinade looked promising as my husband likes all 3 of those ingredients, although I’m sure he never envsioned eating them together in the same dish.

The recipe was straightforward and I think I had all the chopping and other prep work done by the time the water for the broccoli had boiled.

When I set the dish on the table, my husband said, “What’s this?” and I promptly renamed it Broccoli Salad (Lee likes salad too) . Miracle of miracles we both ended up liking it: The Dijon mustard in the vinaigrette made the broccoli palatable to me and yet was not overpowering enough to offend my husband’s palate. I think the dish might be even better the next day, perhaps mixed with leftover pasta to make a cold pasta salad.

Rowling Outs Dumbledore

October 22, 2007

After a reading at Carnegie Hall on Friday, J.K. Rowling took questions from the audience. When a young fan asked whether Dumbledore ever found true love, Rowling revealed that Dumbledore is gay and he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, a “great tragedy.”

Politics & Books

October 19, 2007

The 2008 presidential candidates seem to be a literate bunch — having written 18 books between them so far. Salon Magazine has reviewed 16 of the 18.

A New Hampshire bookstore is using this literary plethora as the basis for a window display. Purchase a candidate’s book and the candidate gets a marble “vote” in this informal poll.

For Edgar

October 18, 2007

For EdgarIn an earlier post I listed some Spooky Halloween Reads. If those weren’t enough for you, then add the mystery For Edgar by Sheldon Rusch to your list. Rusch’s protagonist, Elizabeth Hewitt, is a special agent for the Illinois state police. When a skull is found in a park near Chicago, Hewitt soon deduces that the killer is re-enacting Edgar Allan Poe stories.  Fans of Edgar Allan Poe and academic mysteries may enjoy this greusome police procedural, but don’t blame me if you end up with nightmares!
